There are now 29 standards for public reporting. The National Quality Forum (NQF) has stated they are unambiguous, largely preventable, adverse, serious, indicative of a problem in the facility's safety system, and/or important for public credibility. These criteria are also of concern to both professionals and the lay public. In addition, they are measurable, easily identified, and can be included in a reporting system. The risk of these events occurring is directly influenced by policies and procedures in the facility. To ensure patient safety, maintain professional standards, and comply with federal laws, nurses need to know the items and standards on this list. METHOD OF PARTICIPATION To complete this activity and obtain CE credit, you must do the following: - Read this Course Introduction/Disclosures section in its entirety. - Read the course material. - Complete the Post Test with a score of 80% or more. - Submit the online activity evaluation form. OVERVIEW In the previous program, a general overview of patient safety strategies was presented. In addition, some of the Serious Reportable Events compiled by the National Quality Forum (NQF) were introduced and strategies to prevent them discussed. Those categories included surgical or invasive procedure events, product or device events, and patient protection events. This program will focus on the remainder of that list. LEARNING OBJECTIVES After completing this course, the learner should be able to: - Identify the number of Serious Reportable Events. - Describe at least five strategies to prevent Serious Reportable Events related to care management. - Describe at least two strategies to prevent Serious Reportable Events related to environmental events. - Describe at least one strategy to prevent Serious Reportable Events related to radiologic and potentially criminal events.
